Laura Kinsale Presents…Prosperity by Alexis Hall listen

Laura Kinsale Presents…Prosperity by Alexis Hall

Author: Alexis Hall  | Narrator: Nicholas Boulton

For the third title, I’ve chosen another of Alexis Hall’s works, but this one is—well, as Monty Python would say, “And now for something completely different…”  This short novel is a genre-breaker, part steampunk, part fantasy, part unfulfilled romance, entirely fun. It reminds me of Gaiman and Ellen Kushner. The narrator’s voice is so full of original slang that it might be A Clockwork Orange. As always, Nick’s performance meets the challenge and it’s easy to fall in love with Picadilly and his unique and diverse assortment of companions.

When luckless Dil falls half-dead onto the deck of the skyship Shadowless, he joins an outlaw crew haunted by visions of maelstrom. Driven by a ruthless captain, they hunt the power that holds up the clouds—until it begins to hunt them.

Coming in May 2016.

The second title I’ve selected is by another extraordinary author of unique romantic fiction. Alexis Hall’s beautifully written novel celebrates the simplicity of love in a complicated world.

Ash Winters is barely holding on, near drowning in his own darkness and fear. He lives a gray shadow of a life, sullen and cynical, unable to remember hope or happiness—much less the distant, fading glitterball of love. Then he finds himself hooked up with good-humored Essex boy Darian Taylor, a wannabe model in a sparkly jacket and a fake tan. Darian may not be an intellectual giant, but he’s hysterically funny, and he’s got the courage to challenge Ash to live again.

But loving may be a gift Ash can’t bear to accept, even if his denial breaks the biggest heart he’s ever known.

From the first paragraph of GLITTERLAND, I knew I’d found that rare thing, a writer who can create an alchemy of character, image and emotion that breaks my heart to pieces, and does it with wit and style. I had to hear Nicholas Boulton narrate this award-winning book—who else could bring the voice of an Essex model to life in all his sweet gaudiness?

Hall’s novel For Real was a Publishers Weekly Notable Book of 2015.

We can’t stop now! Nick has narrated all my novels but you won’t have to wait for me to finish another book (hey, I’m working, I’m working!) to hear more. For “Laura Kinsale Presents” I’ll be choosing a select few authors and books to share with you in Nick’s incomparable voice. These are recent titles that I’ve loved and appreciated for their quality and emotional intensity, which Nick can convey so well.

The first title is an intense and haunting historical romance by talented new author Elizabeth Kingston. The sword-wielding daughter of a Welsh rebel crosses weapons with King Edward’s favorite killer.

I love this book because it’s a great, angsty medieval, brought to life in the old school romance tradition. It’s got a kick-ass heroine (who isn’t a brat) and a dark, brooding hero with a past. It’s read by Nicholas Boulton. And we get to hear how those lovely Welsh vowels really sound, in Nick’s to-die-for voice. Like many of you, I’ve been anxious to hear him read fresh new works, and we’re making it happen. Enjoy! And be sure to let us know what you think of Nick’s performance of Kingston’s unique characters in the reviews.

As promised!  Seize the Fire finally in audio. Captain Sir Sheridan Drake is no knight in shining armor, even if he happens to be famous for his heroism. An exiled princess with revolutionary ideas is just a convenient opportunity to get himself out of debt. Princess Olympia isn’t precisely fairy-tale royalty herself; she’s plump and a little shy, and desperate to do something of importance in the world. But though their meeting begins with her hopeless hero worship, a harrowing journey to the bleak edge of the world will transform them both, plunging Olympia into the darkest depths of Sheridan’s battered warrior’s heart and awakening demons she could never imagine in her dreams of glory.
