Here is where imagination must come into play. The real town of Riva del Garda sits at the head of Lake Garda as the city of Monteverde would occupy the valley at the head of its lake, but in the photo there is little of the feel of a medieval Italian walled city with its stone towers and narrow streets.
The real lake town of Malcesine (left and below) is a slightly better picture of how Monteverde would appear, but still there are not enough of the fortified tower houses within the walls.
Below is a medieval tower house in the Tuscan town of San Gemignano, where about 14 of an original 50-70 towers remain. This town literally looks like a miniature Manhattan from a distance. Because there was so much fighting between families within the walled towns, each family had a fortress inside the walls for themselves. Plus there was considerable competition to build the highest and coolest tower in town, in order to keep up with the Gonzagas and Salembinis across the street. ;)
