To the north, Lake Garda narrows between steep mountains, until it appears more like a fjiord than a lake. Allegreto's Monteverde is a princedom covering a large area all around its lake and a considerable distance into the mountains, but its main city would be here where the river enters from the north, guarding the important and lucrative pass into the Alps.
